Life is too short to read a bad book.

Not Blogging, Just Reading
Sorry folks ~ I've been a very bad caretaker of my blog as of late, but I have a great reason. I've been reading (and I'm talking real books, not just my Economics stuff).

I've read:

Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James ~ Excellent
Kiss and Tell by Suzanne Brockmann ~ Very Good
The Kissing Game by Suzanne Brockmann ~ Good
Scenes of Passion by Suzanne Brockmann ~ Good

Next up will be the 3rd in Brockmann's Sunrise Key Trilogy, Otherwise Engaged. Can you tell I've recently read my first Suzanne Brockmann and am hooked (sorry Holly!)?

My Library
Well, I think I'm done. I wish I could show you a picture of the whole thing, but the angle of the room makes it almost impossible to get the whole thing on camera. I've done my best though!!!

This is what I started with (well, technically this is what I started with after I painted):

Then I added my books:

Then I had to clean out some of my books, which I either posted on PBS and/or donated to the library (you have to imagine several of these to get the full effect):

Which brings me to the final product:

I have to say, it's my favorite room in the house now. I still don't have as much shelf space as I initially planned on, but it works. I had to double up my books, so I have two rows on each shelf, but at least they're organized, alphabetized (yes, I'm that girl), and taken out of their respective boxes. And even if it didn't turn out exactly perfect, it's still a far cry better than this:

You Know You're Addicted When.......................
You walk through Target taking pictures of book covers, so that you can rush home to check your library's website to see if they have them.

Yesterday, Kiddo and I did a little date day. We went to the library (I bought 8 friends of the library books ~ $2.00), we went for gelato, and then we went to Target so kiddo could see if the keyboard she wanted was still there (it was). While we were there, I figured it wouldn't hurt anything to go to the book section to see what was there. As I was browsing, I made the comment that I wish I had a pen and paper, so I could write the titles down and check the library when I got home. Kiddo said that my phone had a notepad and I could text it (ps - not a big fan of the texting thing. It takes me forever.). Kiddo offered to text for me, but then the lightbulb went off ~ I have a camera phone!! So I told her I would just take pictures of the covers and then look them up when I got home. PS ~ Kiddo didn't stick around. I think she was 2 or 3 aisles over.

Kiddo made the remark that she didn't know why I was looking at books anyway because I'm not reading the ones I have (she's right). I told her that you never knew when you had the time to read a good book and I liked to have options. Kiddo then said she thought I had about 800 books; I told her I thought it was more like 749 (semantics, anyone???).

We were both wrong.

I checked my librarything account today.

940 books owned, not including the pile on my living room floor that I haven't cataloged yet.

585 of these books are in my tbr pile.

82 of these books are in my TBR Challenge pile (books I really want to read by the end of the year ~ and PS, I think I started the year with 84 books in this pile. What can I say ~ I get distracted.).

I have pictures. I should really post them sometime. I really have run out of room. If I ever disappear, my family knows that they'll be able to find my body buried underneath the stacks in my living room.

That being said ~ it's almost October! The new Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas will be released then, and then in November the new Robyn Carr books will be out. I'm saving room at the top of my TBR pile. I think I'll have some time to read around Christmas.

It's Official (I think)
School starts August 25. I'm freaking out. So many books to read before that time. I want to finish the Marcelli series by Susan Mallery (5 books total), the Guilty series by Laura Lee Guhrke (2 books left), the McLain series by Jodi Thomas (4 books left), on and then thanks to Holly, I just remembered that the Grace Valley series by Robyn Carr is being re-released (3 books). What's a girl to do????

Yet Another Update
A few yays: 1st ~ I finished Once a Rake last night and will post my thoughts tonight when I get home. 2nd ~ I've lost 6 pounds! Woo-hoo! I'm almost rid of my holiday binge weight.

Next up on the reading front will be Crossroads Cafe by Deborah Smith and Sundial by Carrie Lofty (and I also need to finsh Sea Swept by Nora Roberts and There's No Place Like Here by Cecelia Ahern).

Struggling
I'm really struggling to try and finish up Once a Rake. The book is good, don't get me wrong. It's just about 100 pages too long. And the conflicts just keep coming. One conflict ends, and instead of the book concluding with the much anticipated HEA, another conflict enters. And so on. And so on.

~~~~~
I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 15 minutes on the bike yesterday. Today, I'll do either the 3 or 4 mile Walking Away the Pounds workout with Leslie Sansone (love her). Maybe 15 minutes pilates also, I haven't decided yet.
Checking In
So, I'm on page 179 of Promises Linger now. OMG. The horseback scene! Wow. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Asa and Elly are wonderful! I also love the lady who runs the boarding house/cafe ~ Millicent, maybe? Starts with an M, but can't remember it off the top of my head. I also like Cougar (I think that's his name) ~ the son of the doc. Is Promises Keep his story? It felt like SM was building for his story to be next.
~~~~

I'm on page 127 of The Raven Prince. Just finished the garden scene. When Anna and the Earl almost kiss. Wow, Elizabeth Hoyt is brilliant. She knows how to build a scene. Can't wait to find out what happens when Anna gets to London.

~~~~~~
I'm very blessed to have such good things to read right now. Wish I was home doing just that. I hope to have both of these finished over the weekend.
~~~~~

I'm going to sister's house tomorrow to watch Shrek 3 with her and the kiddos. Will be a fun family night. Saturday, I have some alone time until 3, and then I'm on baby duty the rest of the day. So, hope to get some reading time in before and after that. Sunday, we're all going to the Holiday Bazaar. Hope to pick up the rest of my Christmas gifts there....or at least the majority of them. I only have a few things left to get. And then I'll be done ~~ maybe I can actually enjoy the season this year.

Catching Up
I'm halfway through Promises Linger by Sarah McCarty. Very good so far ~ I love Elly and Asa. I hope to finish it up this morning sometime so I'll post more on that later. I'm also halfway through Daring Moves by Linda Lael Miller, and I've started The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt.

~~~~~~
Dr. was on Thursday. My bloodwork is excellent (good), the spot on my spleen is a cyst and they see no reason to have to remove it at this time (good), the bulge on my rib is called Costochondritis, otherwise known as Tietze's Syndrome, and there's really nothing they can do (bad). I could opt for physical therapy, but I think I'll wait on that for now. Another option is cortizone shots. Surgery is a last resort. So, it's more monitoring and I go back again January 2. I'm not sure how to feel about that. The pain ranges from very uncomfortable to almost unbearable ~ ~ and this is everyday. Finally, he did put me back on zoloft again. Which is good ~ I need something to even me out. I don't like this person I am right now. Hey, and it comes in generic now too, so that's good.
~~~~

I went shopping the other day. One skirt, 5 shirts, and a pair of pants. All for $70.00. Not bad. I think I have enough clothes to get me through now. Plus, I don't plan on being this size forever. I still have more weight to lose. But I had no clothes for the winter ~~ and I'll be able to wear these even as I lose ~ they may get too big, but I'll still be able to wear them. And then I guess I'll have to go shopping again.

~~~~
And I binged again. Bought more books ~ like I need anymore. I've run out of room in my linen closet.
Mackenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard
The Duke in Disguise by Gayle Callen
The Lord Next Door by Gayle Callen
The Viscount in Her Bedroom by Gayle Callen
If Only in My Dreams by Wendy Markham
In My Wildest Fantasties by Julianne MacLean
Mistletoe and Holly by Janet Dailey
Highlander in Her Dreams by Allie Mackay
Winter Fire by Jo Beverley
Makin' Whoopie (aka Getting in Touch with my Inner Harlot)
I stole this from Giselle so I had something to post on an early Sunday morning.
Ten Literary characters I'd like to make out with:
1. Sam Donovan (Linda Howard's Mr. Perfect). Because he's a good guy with a touch of bad boy inside. And he's got a wicked sense of humor.
2. Sebastian Lord St Vincent (Lisa Kleypas's Devil in Winter). Because he's not the bad guy everybody thinks he is. And he's gorgeous. Oh, and read pages 241-242 and then don't include him on your list. I dare you.
3. Fitzwilliam Darcy (Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice). Because he'll move heaven and earth to take care of the people he loves (and the people they love).
4. Colin Bridgerton (Julia Quinn's Romancing Mr. Bridgerton). Because who doesn't want the man they've been secretly in love with all her life to fall in love with her?
5. Sebastian Lord Dain (Loretta Chase Lord of Scoundrels). Enough said.
***This shouldn't be so hard. I'm single and desperate. I should be satisfied with any fictional man in my top 10.***
6. Marquis of St. Aubyn aka "Saint"(Suzanne Enoch's London's Perfect Scoundrel). He's not the bad boy he pretends to be.
7. Ben McKinnon (Nora Robert's Montana Sky). He's a tough rancher with a heart of gold. He's tough when he needs to be and wears tender really well.
8. Ranger (Janet Evanovich's Plum Series). He's mysterious but is always around when you need him. And I love when he says "Babe".
9. Drake Rivington (Sandra Brown's Eloquent Silence). He loves completely and is a genuine good guy, once he lets his guard down.
10. Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Julia Quinn's The Viscount Who Loved Me). He's good to laugh with and fun to look at. And the whole fun-to-laugh-at factor.
Now it's your turn. Go forth and list your top 10.
The War Rages On
For those of you who may have been sleeping through it, there's a nasty war going on here in blogland. I first learned off it a few days ago over at Sybil's blog. Sybil posted a very innocent PSA on the joys of Devil in Winter. Then, Kristie called her out. The battle lines have been drawn. Me, I'm Sebastian all the way. If I have to pick a side, his is the one I want to be on!
Derek's an excellent second choice; and Nick would be a fabulous backup!
What I'm Reading Now
So, I got Rosie Dunne yesterday, after reading what Wena had to say about it over at Book Binge. Cracked it open and thought I'd skim the first few pages, you know as a preview ~ something to look forward to once I finished Eclipse. Yeah. 150 pages later. I've laughed, I've gotten misty ~~ and I'm only a little less than halfway through it. I'm hoping to finish it tonight after Ugly Betty. I'm thinking this book is definitely one I can't take to the gym with me ~ people will think I'm nuts. So, I'm reading it in the privacy of my own home where I'm free to react to what's on the pages anyway I want to :D
In other news, I'm about halfway finished with Eclipse and hope to have it finished by the weekend. After that I have to read and review Caine's Reckoning, since that's due by the end of the month. Then I'll probably have to finsh A Lady of the West, since I'm about 100 pages into it now.
So, what's everybody else reading?
I Fell Again, Sorry
Okay, I fell off the face of the Earth again. I'm so sorry! Last update was two months ago ~~~ after I promised I wouldn't do this again.
I've been reading a little ~ not a lot, but considering the reading funk I've been in, I'll take it.
Manhunting by Jennie Crusie: (will be somewhat sloppy as I've borrowed this book out to a friend and haven't received it back yet).
From the Back Cover:: Objective: Find Man. Must Be Rich, Handsome, and Successful.
Kate Svenson is attractive, successful, a brilliant businesswoman — and miserable. After three failed engagements, she realizes it's time for a PLAN...an organized, detailed agenda with a clear goal: finding Mr. Right.
The Cabins resort is ripe with eligible bachelors, all rich, distinguished, and ambitious — just her type. And they're dropping like flies around her...at least, that's how Jake Templeton views the situation. After he's stuck pulling her latest reject out of the swimming pool, Jake's convinced this femme fatale is trouble. Especially for him.
But can a man who's sworn off ambition for good and a woman hanging from the top of the corporate ladder find common ground in the unpredictable territory called the heart, where the word proposal takes on a very different meaning...?
Manhunting was another good one by Crusie. Kate is a career woman working in the family business. She's successful, but not happy. She's been engaged three times, but has never quite made it to the alter. She's lonely and looking for more, so she goes on a vacation to The Cabins Golf Resort in the hopes of finding that something more. What ensues are some hilarious first (and last) dates, along with her developing friendships with Penny (the girl in the cabin next door), Jake (the handyman), and the owner of the local bar (sorry, can't remember her name!).
I'd say this is a Good Read. I probably won't be parting with this book anytime soon (well, if I ever get it back from my friend, that is)
Mysteria (anthology) by MaryJanice Davidson, Gena Showalter, Susan Grant, and PC Cast:
From the back cover: Hunky werewolves, delicious demons and, drop-dead sexy witches all have the same address...
Hundreds of years ago, in the mountains of Colorado (just close enough to Denver for great shoe shopping), the small town of Mysteria was "accidentally" founded by a random act of demonic kindness. Over time, it has become a veritable magnet for the supernatural-a place where magic has quietly coexisted with the mundane world.
It's a town like any other town, where the high school's Fighting Fairies give fans something to cheer about, where everyone knows your name-if not exactly what you are-at the local bar, and where the wishing well actually lives up to its name. Strange occurrences happen every day, but now the ladies of Mysteria are about to unleash a tempest of seduction that will have tongues wagging for centuries to come...
I really enjoyed this anthology and read it from cover to cover. My favorite story was "Mortal In Mysteria," about Damon (also known as Demon High Lord of Self-Doubt and Second Thoughts) who has done the good deed of letting people believe in themselves. For this, he is is forced out of Hell and back to earth ~ right into Harmony Faithfull's backyard. Harmony is the local minister in Mysteria (imagine a minister is a town full of witches, werewolves, and other supernatural beings). Watching Damon and Harmony's relationship was a fun-filled story and I enjoyed every minutes of it.
Also in this anthology were "Alone Wolf" by MaryJanice Davidson (Good), "The Witches of Mysteria" by Gena Showalter (Very Good), and “Candy Cox and the Big Bad (Were)Wolf" by PC Cast (Okay).
The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn:
From the back cover:
2 March 1810 . . .
Today, I fell in love.
At the age of ten, Miranda Cheever showed no signs of Great Beauty. And even at ten, Miranda learned to accept the expectations society held for her—until the afternoon when Nigel Bevelstoke, the handsome and dashing Viscount Turner, solemnly kissed her hand and promised her that one day she would grow into herself, that one day she would be as beautiful as she already was smart. And even at ten, Miranda knew she would love him forever.
But the years that followed were as cruel to Turner as they were kind to Miranda. She is as intriguing as the viscount boldly predicted on that memorable day—while he is a lonely, bitter man, crushed by a devastating loss. But Miranda has never forgotten the truth she set down on paper all those years earlier—and she will not allow the love that is her destiny to slip lightly through her fingers . . .
This one was Okay ~ I was disappointed, I admit. I'd really been looking forward to a new JQ book. Granted, this is the first after the Bridgerton series ~ and also this is one of her first attempts (written around the time of Splendid). But, if I didn't save all of my JQ books, I'd probably donate it to the library because I doubt I'll read it again.
Love At First Bite (anthology) by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Susan Squires, Ronda Thompson, and LA Bankds:
From the back cover:
PRIMAL KISSES. EROTIC SECRETS.
ETERNAL PASSION.
Sink your teeth into these sexy supernatural stories from some of today’s hottest authors.
“Until Death Do Us Part” by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Over five hundred years ago, Esperetta’s soul was bound to her husband’s by dark magic, and when Velkan became a Dark-Hunter, to her horror, she became immortal as well. Now, they must come together to fight an old enemy…and the passion that threatens to consume them once more.
“Ride the Night Wind” by L.A. Banks
Dark dreams haunt Jose Ciponte, dreams of a woman so beautiful he aches for her-and a deadly enemy who stalks them in the night. And now those dreams have become a reality…
“The Gift” by Susan Squires
All Major Davis Ware wants to do is propose to the beautiful Emma Fairchild. Instead, he is called back into battle, and a desperate fate. And Emma will venture into hell itself to save him.
“The Forgotten One” by Ronda Thompson
Lady Anne Baldwin longs to break free from her proper bonds. When she meets the mysterious Merrick, whose eyes glow like a wolf’s, she may have found more than she bargained for.
I only read the Kenyon story in this anthology and I liked it. Sure it was short, but I thought that the story was told very well ~~ not usually something you get with an anthology story. There was a lot of history between Retta and Velkan packed into this small story. I'd say it was Very Good.
Currently Reading:
Stealing Home by Sherryl Woods
Strange Bedpersons by Jennie Crusie
The Nosy Neighbor by Fern Michaels
Charming the Highlander by Janet Chapman
Much Ado About You by Eloisa James
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes by Jennie Crusie et. al
Library Haul:
The Nosy Neighbor by Fern Michaels ($0.25)
Prisoner of Desire by Jennifer Blake (free)
