Life is too short to read a bad book.

Whispering Rock by Robyn Carr
Just Finished:

Synopsis: The tightly knit community of Virgin River has been a safe haven for more than a few lost souls over the years—and there's always room for more . . .

A decorated U.S. Marine reservist, LAPD officer Mike Valenzuela was badly wounded in the line of duty, but has found hope and healing in Virgin River. When he agrees to become the town's first cop, he does so knowing it's time he settled down. Twice divorced and the lover of too many women, he secretly longs for the kind of commitment and happiness his marine buddies have found—a woman who can tie up his heart forever. He finds that woman in Brie Sheridan, a Sacramento prosecutor who understands his drive to protect and serve. Virgin River becomes a safe haven for Brie after nearly losing her life at the hands of a crazed criminal. Though tough and courageous, she's got some fears she can't escape—but now she has someone who will show her just what it means to trust again.

Mike will do anything to help Brie free herself from painful memories. Passionate, strong and gentle, he vows to give back to her what she's so selflessly given him—her heart, and with it, a new beginning.

My Thoughts:First off, I wanted more Mike and Brie. Ms. Carr had built such a great foundation for this couple in Shelter Mountain that I became very excited to read Whispering Rock. And Robyn did a good job of telling the continuing story of our favorite small town, she just didn’t include enough of the story I wanted to see. They seemed like a backburner ~ maybe that’s not the right word. But the story wasn’t about them with side stories thrown in ~ the story seemed to be more a collection of side stories, Mike and Brie’s included.

I liked the addition of the new characters ~ Tom was a welcomed sight since there wasn’t much of Rick in this book and I enjoyed seeing his romance with Brenda blossom. I also liked the addition of Vanni, Paul, and Matt. ***SPOILER*** ~ Although, I did see what was going to happen with Matt coming from miles away. With all the undercurrents between Paul and Vanni, how was it going to be feasible to keep him around. I wonder if Paul and Vanni’s story will be next??***END SPOILER***

I can’t begin to tell you how much I love, love, love this series ~ even if I was disappointed with Whispering Rock. Robyn Carr has quickly turned into one of my favorite authors and I am anxious to read more by her.

Verdict: This was Good, but only because I had hoped for more Mike and Brie. Ms. Carr is a phenomenal writer and I hope she doesn’t wait too long before we get our next installment of the goings on in Virgin River.

Stacy ~ You'd need to start with Virgin River first, anyway. Please tell me that is in your TBR pile somewhere?!!!!?

I agree with you Dev. I'm a bit disappointed that the main characters aren't the focus of the books. However, I have to say that the new characters introduced in this book are quite interesting. I can't wai to see what's going to happen between V and P... and I really enjoyed Tom and Brenda.

Totally agree. I was really disappointed in the lack of focus on Mike and Brie. Funnily enough, it didn't bother me a lick in the last book, but in this one? I wanted more. LOL

    Fickle reader that I am.

Nath ~ I'm really looking forward to the next one...I just have to remember that the story isn't just about the core characters.

Izzy ~ You won't be sorry. You're in for some great reading.

Holly ~ Exactly! Although, it did bother me a bit in Shelter Mountain that Jack and Mel were around so much. Not that I didn't love them, I just felt like they'd already had their story. This one, though, really bothered me. The foundation for Mike and Brie was done so wonderfully that I thought this was going to be an exceptional book. It was still good, but not what I was hoping for.
