Chilly Chili
I love it when the weather gets cooler ~ the hot days are behind us for another year and now we're adapting to the autumn temperatures. What does that mean to me? Well, other than the fact that my house is no longer a sweatbox, it means it's time for my annual chilly chili day. I slow cook a big pot of chili all day long, make a big batch of fry bread, and have lots of cheese, green onions and sour cream to go along with it. You'd think making all that food I'd be serving an army, right? Well, wrong. It's just me. Usually my niece is with me when I make it, but not today. But regardless, I'm excited. The weather is finally turning!

What excites you about the change of weather? Anything you're looking forward to as Autumn approaches?

Right now I'd like to join you for chili! We just started getting cooler weather the past couple of days. For us that means we are dropping into the high 50s at night but are still in the 70s during the day. So no chili yet. Although chili is a big favorite, my family knows it's cold weather when I make my homemade chicken noodle soup in the crock pot.

Rosie ~ That's my second favorite thing to make when it's colder out. My family teases me that it's the bottomless pot of soup because it seems no matter how much of it I eat, it never goes away.

We are in the opposite season to you, but I know that summer is coming when the barbecue gets pulled out of the shed....I'm getting it out this week and cleaning it off ready to use next weekend!

    Mmmm...sounds like a good meal!!

I just love sweater weather. All the leaves are changing colours and all the mosquitoes are gone. Fall is my favourite season of all. For no special reason, it just makes me happy.

Marg ~ I love barbecue weather. My family, though, is one of those that'll barbecue all year long. We just push the barbecuer to the door and have easy access to the grill.

Ames ~ I got to break out my sweaters on Friday and loved it! I really enjoy the change of season.

    Is it Spring yet!?

I do like eating richer foods - meats with gravy, chili (although I can only use Kidney beans - I used to just throw a ton of beans in the pot but the tummy has rebelled so back to the old style), my friend and I will get together and make personal size home made meat pies - yum!

I like the chillier nights but Fall and Winter are not my best times. Although I should start to feel some love towards them as most people up here hunker down and just veg. Since I love to veg this should be a good thing ;)

Here in Miami we don't have anything that qualifies as autumn. In fact, we barely have a winter. What we DO have is one helluva summer that sucks to high hell. It would be nice to have the seasons change but what can I say? We suck. LOL.

mmm that's sounds perfect! (Love homemade soups and chili!) Hey, I've got a great taco soup recipe for the crocpot, If you're interested let me know at zeek319@hotmail.com and I'll email it to ya!)

I just like the fact that things change in the fall. I get all hepped up with change and I feel that excitment every time spring and fall come around. Oh and I love the colors of fall as well!

Cindy ~ Fall and Spring are my favorite seasons. Winter could be my favorite season, if I didn't have to drive on the icy roads :-) I only put Kidney beans in my chili ~ I'm not a fan of beans, in general.

Mailyn ~ I spent Christmas in Miami one year....got stung by a bee. I lived in California for almost three years as a nanny and just could not get used to not having the seasons change.

Zeek ~ Mmmm, taco soup. One of my favorites. The recipe I have has ranch dressing in it. I don't make it as often as I make the chili, but anything that has ranch dressing in it can't be half bad. I'll email you later when I get home.

No ranch, lots of beans ... it's YUMMY! No need to email, I'll just send it along and see what you think!

Ok, silly me, I don't have your email addy!

    here's the recipe:

    Taco Soup

1 large can of progresso Harty Black Bean Soup OR
    2 cans progresso lentel soup
2 cans of great northern beans.
    1 can pinto beans
1can diced Tomatoes with Roast peppers
    1 cup of chicken broth
    2 cans of Chicken breast
    15 oz tomato sauce.
1 pack of taco mix (el paso)
    1/4 chopped onions
Cook in the crock pack ... add sugar!!

    It really is a goodie!

Ooh, it does sound good. I don't think I've tried taco soup made like this before. I'll probably substitute black beans for the pintos though...not a fan :-)

Thanks ~ I'll let you know when I try it!

Apples! I love apples just off the trees in the fall.

  • At 9:12 PM, Blogger Dev

Zeek ~ I like the new nickname :-)

Kristie ~ Yes, apples! Fresh homemade apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Yum! My friend was so excited when she bought her house because she had 4 apple trees. 10 years later, she hates the apple trees. Apples falling everywhere. She gives away laundry baskets full of apples to anyone of us who will take them.

I also look forward to all of the squash that comes out this year. Oh, and my absolute favorite ~ pomegranates!!!! Yum!

Mmmmm. Cold weather and chili. I can't wait! We are on the verge of autumn and I feel like a kid in the Disneyland parking lot. I can see the Materhorn and I can't get to the gate fast enough! lol

    Jen ~

I always look forward to the change in season. I think I'm in the minority but summer is my least favorite time of year.

Chili and fry bread, sounds wonderful. I made chili over the weekend.

I love fall, apple and pumpkin picking, crisp cool air, the first hints of snow flakes...

  • At 10:38 AM, Blogger Dev

Tara Marie ~ I love going to the pumpkin patches around town and picking up fresh squash. Then there's hay rides, corn mazes and all the fun that goes along with those.

I absolutely can't wait until the first snow fall. I get excited just seeing the flakes fly. I may hate driving in the stuff, but I absolutely love watching it fall.

  • At 12:18 PM, Blogger Jenster

Can I join your minority? Summer is hot and humid and miserable. Fall and spring are also my favorite seasons, but I don't mind a cold winter. "Too cold to go outside" is the perfect excuse for good food, hot coffee and a great book!

  • At 12:37 PM, Blogger Dev

    Jen ~

The more the merrier. I agree. If it's too cold, that's the perfect excuse to put on the flannel jammies, cuddle up in my fuzzy blanket, make a hot cup of tea (or cocoa) and read.

Oohhh, yes. Chili's a big one for me.

I like Texas style, with the chunks of slow cooked beef, so they're tender and falling apart. And I like it spicy. Without celery. :-)

I also like visits to the cider mill, complete with hot spiced cider and donuts, and a hayride.

I love any kind of soup and bread, particularly if I'm cooking them in my own kitchen so I can smell them! Mmmm.

I love sweaters, University of Michigan football (GO BLUE!), red-tipped noses, and hot chocolate.

Fall is my favorite time of year. Love it.

    Colleen ~

Good answers! I love sweaters too. I love bundling up and going out into the crispness of the cold weather ~ but, I hate scarfs. Refuse to wear them. Growing up, Mom bundled us up so bad I literally thought I was going to suffocate (if you've seen A Christmas Story ~ think of Ralphie's little brother being bundled up to go to school). Yes, it was that bad.

I love LOVE overcast days. I don't know what it is, but I love them. Hubby says they are depressing. So that's what I'm looking forward too. Oh and the smell of rain.

  • At 7:54 AM, Blogger Dev

Isabel ~ I love the smell of rain. I open up all of my windows when it's raining outside just so I can get the smell in my house.

Hey what's fry bread? I want to try that...it sounds good, even though I need to stay away from fried foods. LOL.

But that meal sounds scrumptious, I love it when my sister makes homemade chilli, too bad she doesn't make it often enough and here in California, it's not that cold yet, the colder weather has only been teasing us becuase right now, the sun is shining and it's warm out, GO AWAY BRING THE FALL WEATHER DAMMIT!

    Ugh.

Enjoy your chilli and your colder weather, you lucky duck! =)

Dylan ~ Frybread is a Native American food ~ I think it's pretty common all over. It's a flat dough made of flour, salt, baking powder and water (you can also add shortening if you want to).

Have you ever heard of Indian Tacos? Frybread is usually the base of those.
